Eden Shanghai Perrier-Jouet 2019

EDEN by Perrier-Jouët, Shanghai 2019

In Shanghai, between 8th November and 7th December 2019, Maison Perrier-Jouët presents an experiential journey inspired by reinvented nature, enriched by the creative freedom of its Artisans of the Wild.

Maison Perrier-Jouët has asserted a singular vision of the world since its very foundation, inspired by the free spirit of its founders and the Art Nouveau movement. This vision is centred around creative liberty and an unconventional observation of nature - extravagant, vibrant, unbridled nature that informs everything the House does. To spread the magnetism of Art of the Wild, the House has assembled an international community of creative talents called Artisans of the Wild, who embody this unique energy.

Over the course of a month, Maison Perrier-Jouët will occupy an elegant address in the Xintiangi neighbourhood, where experiences and events offered by different Artisans of the Wild will take place day and night.

MAISON BELLE EPOQUE AS SEEN BY CHEN MAN

An exhibition of a photographic series revealing a singular, contemporary vision of the Maison Perrier-Jouët universe in Epernay. The original compositions by Chen Man invite the viewer on a unique voyage into the heart of the vineyards and cellars of the Maison Belle Epoque. In these essential settings, the artist captured the very essence of the spirit of Maison Perrier-Jouët.

Chinese photographer Chen Man made her name on the international fashion photography scene in the early millennium. Her signature, pared-back style blends traditional painting with the latest digital techniques to create harmonious, innovative images that delicately and deftly explore vital subjects.

“In photography, like in any other forms of art, the most important thing is always beyond what we see. That’s the power of nature: its interaction yields emotions and memories, stories of an instant. So, in my work, the hidden message is always more important than the art form itself. Most of the time, this message may not be translated precisely into words, it’s just a feeling”.

HYPERNATURE  BY BETHAN LAURA WOOD FOR PERRIER-JOUËT

Taking the form of a life-sized tree, HyperNature offers a whimsical tasting experience that references the terroir of Champagne and the savoir-faire of Maison Perrier-Jouët. Echoing a reinvented nature, Wood’s creation for the House is free in form, intense in colour and radiant by its presence. It invites guests to a unique, immersive champagne experience, where they can “pluck” elements from the structure, as one would a grape from a bunch or a bunch from a vine.

After a full year of appearances at prestigious events around the world, HyperNature will make one final stop at EDEN Shanghai by Perrier-Jouët, before making its way to the Maison Belle Epoque in Epernay. Here, it will join other contemporary art commissions, all of which engage with the House’s Art Nouveau heritage.

THE LIFE CYCLES OF NATURE BY LAILA GOHAR FOR MAISON PERRIER-JOUËT

With an Art Nouveau aesthetic, this installation first invites guests to trace the six phases of a grape in The Life Cycle of a Grape, from seed to harvest. Organic forms created from coloured sugar glass capture each of these key moments, suspended at head-height, encouraging visitors to pluck and taste them. These diaphanous creations are as delicious as they are delicate, with flavours inspired by select aromas of Perrier-Jouët cuvées – such as grapefruit, pear and white peach.

The second stage of Laila Gohar’s installation turns its attention to Maison Perrier-Jouët’s attachment to nature and the terroir. Here, they will find a variety of cakes whose floral decorations are inspired by the anemone motif designed for the House in 1902 by Emile Gallé, a Master of Art Nouveau. Like urban gardeners, visitors are invited to “plant” these cakes with plenty of delicate dark chocolate “soil” in flowerpots that they are then able to either take home to enjoy or eat on site.
